Kylie Hutchinson  | Student Profile
The flexibility offered by SuniTAFE has allowed Kylie Hutchinson to pursue her goals whilst meeting the demands of everyday life.

Kylie is enrolled in Certificate III in Individual Support. This qualification aims to equip students with the skills and competencies they require to provide person-centred care to those who may need it for a range of reasons, including due to ageing or disability.

Despite her ongoing interest in being a professional carer, Kylie has experienced a number of barriers to pursuing the necessary education.

“I am a mother returning to the workforce for the first time since having children.”
“SuniTAFE running a night course allowed me the opportunity to study, as I could not study during the day with working and running a household,” Kylie said.

SuniTAFE’s Mildura campus offers a night class for the Certificate III in Individual Support. This presents students with a flexible option to access on-campus educational opportunities. The night classes are run two nights a week over an 18-month period.

For Kylie, this face-to-face learning is her favourite aspect of her course.

“I really enjoy classroom-based learning. I am a social person and enjoy the company of others in the class.”

“Being able to learn face-to-face in the classroom has assisted me to meet my goals, as often at home you don’t find the time, and has kept me on track to complete my course,” Kylie said.

Individual Support students at SuniTAFE have access to a range of facilities on campus to enhance their learning and prepare them for their transition into the workplace.

This, along with the experienced and knowledgeable teachers, has been of great value to Kylie’s learning.

“SuniTAFE has a simulated aged-care room for us to complete our practical tasks and I find it very educational and confidence-building to be able to practice with all the equipment prior to entering the workplace.”

“I am very appreciative of the training facilities at SuniTAFE, and being able to use the equipment they provide. I have found my teachers to be professional and approachable and enjoy my face-to-face learning with them,” Kylie said.

Kylie is scheduled to finish her studies in 2023.

She currently holds a role as a cleaner at Regis Aged Care. Her hopes are that, by upskilling with the Certificate III in Individual Support, she will be able to move positions within the organisation.
